The next morning, I got up, handled my morning hygiene, grabbed some coffee, and flew out the door to head to class. I had to get up before everyone else so that I could beat the traffic in the tunnel. I grabbed the keys to my Jeep and pulled out of the garage. For some reason I felt like driving my cute little SUV over the luxury cars more often lately. I guess it was so I wouldn’t lose sight of where I used to be and become someone that I didn’t recognize.

I turned the radio on to 103 Jamz, and drove towards the interstate. Once I hit the on ramp and got off, I pressed the gas and headed towards the Hampton Road Bridge Tunnel. I was cracking up listening to The Breakfast Club, when my phone rang. I hit the Bluetooth button on my steering wheel and connected the call.

“You just left me here with these rug rats? I’m hurt.” Fabian’s playful voice came through my speakers. I heard the kids in the background and knew that Holden had woken up and tried to get in bed with Fabian and the girls.

“I’m sorry baby, but you know how bad traffic can get in the morning. I had to leave so that I won’t be late. That wouldn’t look good at all; especially when I apply for residency,” I explained.

“I know baby. Tonight’s my folks last night here and I wanted to have a family dinner. Do you think Tiana would be up for it, or should we leave her alone?” he asked.

“I’ll text her and see how she’s feeling. She’s pretty much went into hiding since everything went down. Matter of fact, as soon as I finish my rounds at the hospital, I’ll head over there and force her out,” I told him.

“That’s what’s up. Have fun and I’ll see you later Doc,” he said and disconnected the call.

I pulled up to the school and joined my classmates before we were escorted across to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and given directions on where to go. I headed to the surgical wing with five other students that were interested in surgery. I was ready to see what life as a resident had in store for me.
